Benson touts Michigan reforms in lobbying for federal election law changes

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson urged a congressional panel Wednesday to support one of the largest overhauls of U.S. election law in decades.

The “For the People” bill, passed by the U.S. House 220-210 earlier this month, would make sweeping changes to federal election law, including instilling restrictions on gerrymandering; lifting photo identification rules; allowing same day registration, early voting and no-reason absentee voting; restricting purges of state voter rolls; and tightening restrictions on campaign financing.

President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. has won the presidential election, but there are efforts to sow doubt about the outcome.

Rudolph W. Giuliani, President Trump’s personal lawyer, has spread a litany of falsehoods and conspiracy theories in media appearances and social media over the past week. Mr. Giuliani, who has a long history of fudging the truth and who has led the Trump campaign’s largely unsuccessful legal fight over the election, has focused particularly on debunked claims of barred poll workers and unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about a voting software company affecting the election’s outcome.
