Local Elections Officials Express Concerns With Proposed Voting Bills

As lawmakers work on a massive voting bill that would make sweeping changes to how elections in Georgia are run, some local elections officials say the proposals would make their jobs harder and hurt voters.

GPB News and the Georgia News Lab contacted several county elections directors and reviewed testimony from several state House and Senate committee hearings to see how officials tasked with running elections say they would be affected by changes in upcoming elections.

Video footage from Georgia shows suitcases filled with ballots pulled from under a table and illegally counted after election observers were told to leave.

Georgia election officials disputed a video promoted by President Donald Trump’s campaign as evidence of election fraud, saying the footage shows nothing but “normal ballot processing.”

The surveillance video was introduced as proof of illegal activity by Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and his team during a Dec. 3 hearing with Georgia state legislators. The Trump campaign then circulated One America News Network’s live coverage of the event online.

Why we need full public funding of election campaigns

Let’s be optimistic and say that it’s never too late to start restoring trust in politics and its practitioners. It is not as though we can return to some golden age of democracy, when voters considered politics an honourable and noble profession, because such an era never existed, at least not on this side of ancient Athens.

But the healthy scepticism we used to display towards politics has developed a more malignant form, uncomfortably reminiscent of 1930s and 1940s Europe.
